It is the brainchild of the Meads Community Association with funding from the three ward councillors from Eastbourne council and other sponsors including Bede’s Prep, Hart Reade Solicitors, Hydro Hotel, McGregor Letting Consultants, St Andrew’s Prep, St John’s Church, the West Rocks Group, which owns All Saints Chapel and Xing Fu Chinese restaurant.

Meads resident Kim Adams wrote the text, fellow resident Richard Drinkall took the photographs and the booklet was designed by Eastbourne heritage expert Nicholas Howell.

One of the Meads councillors Robert Smart said a previous historic guide had proved very popular over the years and that he was delighted an updated version was now available.

He said, “Part of our role as ward councillors is to promote Meads and to promote the benefits of walking and exercise. By supporting this guide, we are meeting both targets and giving people an excellent historic guide to this fascinating part of Eastbourne.”

The Devolved Budget grant is supported by fellow ward councillors Barry Taylor and Jane Lamb.

Terrie Rintoul at the MCA said a team was recruited consisting of trained tour guide and Meads resident Kim Adams who has been leading walks around Meads and other parts of Eastbourne since 2015.

Terrie said, “Kim generously offered to write the new text and was joined by fellow resident Richard Drinkall who, equally generously, agreed to provide photographs. The MCA engaged the services of local graphic designer Nicholas Howell who has a keen interest in Eastbourne’s heritage.

“The result is a 40-page full colour booklet featuring 30 sites in Meads including the Crow’s Nest and the Western Parades, Bede’s Prep School, the Hydro Hotel, All Saints Chapel, and the Pilot Inn.

“The booklet doubles up as a walking guide that can just as easily be enjoyed in the comfort of your armchair.

“The centre spread map shows the route clearly marked, and each place is numbered to correspond to its text in the booklet. The front and back covers combine to form a stunning panoramic shot of the whole of Meads taken from the path up to the Downs.
