When Santa swapped his sleigh for a sports car

Rather than Rudolph and a gaggle of other reindeer, he rolled up in an open-topped MGB sports car.

The big man was visiting St Wilfrid’s School’s Christmas bazaar to help the youngsters raise money for school funds.

He must have brought a little bit of Christmas magic with him as the bazaar broke the school’s record and raised £1,000.

At the other end of the fundraising spectrum, 1988 was the year Children In Need became a registered charity, having been launched in 1980 under the watchful eye of Terry Wogan.

Children at Northlands Wood Primary School, Haywards Heath, collected £103 when they laid out a 113-metre line of coins which wove its way through the school corridors.

Over at London Meeds School, in Burgess Hill, the children raised an impressive £1,500 with a mini-fair, fancy dress and disco.
