A Roman period rubbish dump

A kitchen midden (domestic waste dump) was found in Seaford in 1935.

What made it an exciting find was that pottery was found in it that dated to 200AD.

According to the Sussex Notes and Queries of that year, the pit was dug in sand and the refuse was at a depth of 2ft 6ins.

Everything was mixed up together - potsherds of many kinds, sea shells in considerable numbers, bones of pig, horse and ox, one or two fragments of glass, a little charcoal and pieces of Roman tile.
