Beautiful bodies on show at Saffron Olympic show

Preview: Body Casting Olympians by Louise Giblin, Saffron Gallery, High Street, Battle, until August 11.

BATTLE’S Saffron Gallery has secured a major coup for Battle in bringing world-leading body cast sculptor Louise Giblin ARBS’ ‘Body Casting Olympians’ exhibition to the town for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Five great British Olympians ‘got plastered’ by Louise to create life size torsos with intricately carved detail.

All five torsos, along with associated drawings and bronze plaques, will be at Saffron throughout the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Originally launched at the Mall Galleries in London in May, the exhibition at Saffron will be the last opportunity to see the collection in it’s entirety as many pieces have already been sold and will go to private collections immediately after.

Louise worked closely with leading British Olympians Kriss Akabusi MBE, double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, Sally Gunnell OBE, three-times world champion gymnast Beth Tweddle MBE and Paralympian swimmer Darren Leach to create a series of sculptures which represents the city of each athlete’s most cherished medal win.

The front of each body cast torso reflects the medal win of greatest personal and professional significance to the athlete, along with key elements from the city in which it was won.

All are united by an underlying Union Flag and, on the back, a highly stylised musculature.

The exhibition opens to the public at 10am today (Friday) and runs until 5pm on Saturday, August 11.

Gallery opening times are 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.
