Famous double act brought to life once more

THEY have become one of the great double acts in the theatre – they are Amanda and Elyot in Noel Coward’s Private Lives.

Splendid combinations have been seen over the years on both sides of the Atlantic, the most recent being Kim Cattrall and Matthew Macfadyen. Before them in the love-hate roles have been Lindsay Duncan and Alan Rickman, Joan Collins and Keith Baxter and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Originally the parts were played by Gertrude Lawrence and Coward himself.

At the Stables Theatre, there is now the chance to see them played in style by John Ludlam and, straight from her success in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, in April, Heather Alexander.

This is a play that begins with a divorced couple, each half of which is on their honeymoon with a new spouse, who find each other in the same resort, in the same hotel, and indeed in adjoining rooms.

And so begins one of Coward’s best known and best loved plays; savour his wit, elegant dialogue and talent to amuse from tonight (Friday) at the Stables.
