Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.
Lord Zouche, Baron of Ashby, was a loyal supporter of Henry III, and fought for him at Lewes.
In 1270 he was involved in a lawsuit against John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey, at Westminster Hall. When the case seemed to be going la Zouche’s way, de Warenne and his men attacked him, before the King and his justices. Six weeks later, he died of his wounds. The Earl was fined 10,000 marks; a huge sum, but he could afford it - and anyway, the King reduced it later. Put not your trust in princes.
