Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.

A week or so before Lewes, Sir John summoned the men of East Sussex and West Kent to the small village of Flimwell, presumable to conscript them into the baronial forces. However, as the royal army matched past, someone put an arrow through the King’s cook - perhaps he was foraging? - and in retaliation, three hundred or so of Sir John’s recruits were rounded up and beheaded. This may help to explain the desperate courage with which Earl Simon’s small army fought.
