Keen local historian Jon Gunson has compiled this series entitled Friday Knight - knights who fought at the Battle of Lewes - giving each a brief biography.
Prince Edward was a prisoner of the Montfortians after the Battle of Lewes. When he was held at Wallingford, Sir Robert and Warin de Bassingbourne took a small army to rescue him. Release the Prince, they said, or we will attack the castle. Fair enough, said the garrison. We will tie Edward up, and drape him over the arm of this catapult. You attack the castle, and we will let him go. The Royalists withdrew.
