A lecture from University of Chichester senior lecturer Dr. Ross Wilson Learn more about how the Great War radically changed the lives of people in Chichester, how it altered the way in which people lived, the food they ate and the entertainments they enjoyed.

GARDENING: Dahlias are once again in fashion in any well stocked garden. Tonight at 7pm for 7.30pm in Donnington Parish Hall, Donnington’s gardeners are devoting the evening to listen to some of the country’s top dahlia growers tell all there is to know about this plant and getting the very best from them. The speakers are bringing with them some popular and some exclusive plants for sale so do not miss this opportunity. All visitors welcome. Entry £1. Meet: Along Sheepwash Lane, by the recreation ground in Lavant. By Car: Take A286 (Broyle Road) from Chichester to Lavant, right at roundabout. First left after recreation ground (Sheepwash Lane) park on roadside. By Bus: 60 Chichester to Lavant. Walk down road past pub to Sheepwash Lane and River Lavant. 10.30am.

MIDHURST

EXHIBITION: “10th Anniversary of the Ems Valley U3A”. To celebrate the 10 years that the Ems Valley U3A have been active in Emsworth they are delighted to be able to share their enthusiasm for learning with the wider Emsworth Community. The exhibition will illustrate the various interests and activities that the members take part in and show that there is certainly learning, life and fun in Emsworth after retirement. The exhibition runs until 11th September. Emsworth Museum, 10B North Street, Emsworth PO10 7DD, is open on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Monday (August 29th) 10.30am - 4.30pm and on Sundays (and all Fridays in August) 2.30pm - 4.30pm. FAIR: The annual Hotham Park Country Fair is on August 6th and 7th from 11am - 5pm both days with free entry. The bandstand will be the hub for music and entertainment across the weekend. The show ground will host attractions and the Mary McFee pavilion will be the home of Punch and Judy with the talented “ Crazy Hazee”. Over 60 arts and crafts stalls, wagon rides, meet the alpacas, bouncy castles and lots more for the all ages and interests.

EASEBOURNE

EVENT: Easebourne Garden and Allotment Society is holding their annual produce show in Cowdray Hall, Easebourne Street. The Society’s members will be exhibiting their vegetables, fruit, flowers, floral arrangements, baked goods and preserves, and this year there are a couple of new categories for children. Doors open at 3.15pm and prize giving is at 4pm. Entry is free and tea and cake is available for only £2.

FILM: Exhibition, talk & film screening. The Yapton & Ford Local History Group, in conjunction with the IWM and Somme100Film, are commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme with two screenings of the original film taken and released in 1916. There will be supporting talks given by Philip Robinson, Local & Military historian as well as an exhibition. This will take place in the Yapton & Ford village hall between midday and 6.30pm. The talks and exhibition are free but there is a charge of £1 per ticket for the film. Places are limited for the screenings so book early to save disappointment. WALK: Chichester walls walk, 2pm. Do come along on this free guided walk around the most intact Roman Walls in the south of England. It will be led by Doris Norton, the Secretary of the Chichester Walls Trust. Please meet at the Cathedral Bell Tower at 2pm. The walk will finish at about 3.30pm. This Walk takes place on the first Sunday of every month. Donations to the work of the Walls Trust are welcome. A full-colour souvenir walls guide (£3) is available to buy, as is the large full-colour book about the history of the walls (£9).

WALK: Local history walk, 6pm. This is the last opportunity in 2016 to join Dr Margaret Rogers on her guided walk around southern Emsworth and to learn some of the history of the area. If you were unable to join her on the three previous occasions this year she is repeating this popular event for just one more time and will be pleased to see you. Starting from outside Emsworth Museum at 6pm, the walk will take about two hours walking at a comfortable pace. Walkers can stop at any time. Cost £3 per person to be paid at the start of the walk.
