Lively mix from Heather

Preview: Original paintings, prints and illustrations by Heather Stuart. Hastings Arts Forum, 36 Marina, St Leonards. September 13 to 25. Free.

While Heather’s children’s book illustrations remain light-hearted, childlike, quirky and vibrantly coloured, her personal work is much more thought provoking, drawing as it does from a deep well of childhood memories, of travels abroad, emotions and life experiences.

Also evident in Heather’s personal work is her life-long fascination with Britain in the 1930s and 1940s, influenced by childhood trips to her grandparent’s house in Wigan and stories from her parents, who were both young children (her father an evacuee) during the Second World War.

The Hastings-born artist has produced a large painting of the Hastings Lifeboat Sealink Endeavour, at sea, with the Old Town in the background.

If the painting is sold at the exhibition, a percentage will be donated to the RNLI.

The latest children’s book Heather has illustrated is Ten minute Christmas activities, written by Bethan James.

She will be signing copies at Waterstones on November 10.
