One of Shakespeare’s most compelling comedies

Preview: The Merchant of Venice, The Stables Theatre, The Bourne. July 25, 26, 28. £12.50 (£7.50 concs).

SET in the bustling streets and money markets of ancient Venice and the wealthy estate of Belmont, home to Portia a beautiful heiress, it features Antonio a rich merchant banker (nothing if not topical!), Shylock an abused Jewish moneylender bent on revenge, Bassanio an enamoured nobleman who has squandered his money, a “merry bond” that becomes a matter of life and death, a bitter courtroom battle, love and hate, disguise and deceit, friendship and revenge.

These are some of the ingredients in what is one of Shakespeare’s most compelling and disturbing comedies.

Peter Mould who directs also takes on the role of Shylock.
