Quality operalive from Glyndebourne

Three operas are to be broadcast live from Glyndebourne to the auditorium at the De La Warr Pavilion, in Bexhill this summer.

The first is Ariadne auf Naxos on June 4.

Sung in German with English surtitles, the 2013 Glyndebourne Festival opens with a new production of this collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

After the enormous success of Der Rosenkavalier, the two men conceived the idea of a light entertainment, a small trifle to amuse and divert the public.

Doors open at 6.30pm, and the show starts at 7pm.

The second Glyndebourne Festival broadcast is Hippolyte et Aricie, on July 25.

Hippolyte et Aricie was Rameau’s first work for the stage, written when he was nearly 50.

It is also Glyndebourne’s first production of an opera by Rameau, and is sung in French with English surtitles.

Finally Don Pasquale will be broadcast live from Glyndebourne on August 6.

Donizetti was a prolific composer, and Don Pasquale is the 64th of his 66 operas written only a year before the onset of the syphilis-induced dementia that was eventually to overwhelm him.
