Raucous tradition upheld

Preview: Workshop and Evensong, Catsfield Village Hall. Sunday, October 7, 2pm and 6pm.

The emphasis was on enthusiasm rather than musical skill and now this tradition is being honoured in Catsfield.

St Laurence Church, Catsfield and Sussex Harmony ‘quire’ is recreating the mood and music at a workshop in Catsfield Village Hall on October 7.

To round the day off there will be a period Evensong in the church, with Sussex Harmony suitably attired in the costume of the time.

The music is easy and fun to sing, and some of it will come from Catsfield’s own manuscripts dating from about 1750.  These can now be found in library of the Sussex Archaeological Society and many have been published in a booklet called The Singing Seat. This was named after the bench in Catsfield church where their quire used to perform.

All are welcome to join the fun, whether that is by singing, playing or just listening.
