Rescued books as artefacts

A sculpture comprising more than 2,000 books is coming to the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, courtesy of Bristol-based artist Tina Hill.

Part of the Telling Stories: Hastings project, Tina Hill’s work entitled Excavating Babel is a 12ft high tower of ‘unwanted’ books which Tina has rescued then built into an extraordinary sculpture.

The work references the story in Genesis (11, 1-9) where mankind builds a tower to reach God and in so doing incurred his displeasure.

The tower was destroyed and man was cast across the globe with different languages to separate people forever.

Excavating Babel has been shown across the Uk and will be at Electro Studios Project Space on 10/11 & 17/18 November.

The show opens on Saturday, November 10, with a talk between Tina and Alexander Brattell ( another Telling Stories artist) at 2pm. The event is free and all are welcome.

Hastings Museum and Art Gallery is located off Bohemia Road.

Telling Stories is a group exhibition of 14 artists from Hastings and Margate who have come together to tell stories through their work, and is on until January 13, 2013.
