Review by Mary King: Victoria Howarth Jazz Quintet

CROWDS filled Pomegranate last Monday for a sultry evening of jazz from new local outfit The Victoria Howarth Quintet.

On a warm night, the audience spilled out onto George Street to drink, relax and listen to an impressive set including classic jazz numbers by the likes of Nina Simone and Gershwin, and newer songs such as Suzanne Cloud’s Collagen Lips. The balmy evening along with Ms Howarth’s rich, powerful voice, made listeners feel more south of France than south coast with the novelty of a Monday night concert adding to the holiday atmosphere.

Rufus Stone, Dan Jefferies, Matt Juckes and Richmond Stockwell showed extreme technical proficiency and a dexterous emotional range from the slow and poignant to the fast and flippant Key to Your Ferrari, a feel-good number to end on.

The next gig will be on Monday, (August 15), and hopefully the night will become a regular fortnightly feature at Pomegranate.
