REVIEW: Live at the Theatre Royal, Brighton

And so it was that I found myself at the Theatre Royal in Brighton last night for North London comedy production company Invisible Dot Ltd’s latest gig.

On the bill were three comedians, headlined by Adam Buxton, known for his technological strand of funny-making.

Despite it not being a sell-out event, the audience was clearly excited for his arrival, and I don’t think they were disappointed.

What they got was 40 minutes of mainly video clip-based gags, cleverly put together by Buxton.

Ironically, perhaps the most popular part of his set was the material not actually written by him. He took viewers through some of the comments left on YouTube videos - and it was hilarious. My sides were actually hurting - clearly a testament to his delivery of seemingly pretty innocuous material.

Preceding him was Dane Baptiste, a smart Best-Newcomer nominated performer who has a BBC3 sitcom coming out next month. He was followed by Sam Simmons, a comedian quite unlike any I had seen before.

His set is absolutely ridiculous, but in the bext possible way. From the wacky to the downright weird, it often made no sense, but it couldn’t have been funnier if he tried. It’s impossible to explain, but if you see him on a bill, go check it out.

The evening was seemlessly held together by Mae Martin, whose positive delivery made it impossibly not to warm to her immediately.

It’s such a shame it wasn’t a full house for what was a night of smart, intelligent, comedy as it should be.
