Singers get orchestral accompaniment

Composers include Rutter, Mozart, Victoria, Byrd, Parry and Goodall.

The soloist is Rose Setten (soprano). Orchestral accompaniment is provided by Just Strings quartet, Dominic Smith (flute) and Eleanor Hodgson (oboe). The organist is Marcus Martin and Helen Emery conducts.

Spokeswoman Jean Arnaud said: “Having an orchestral accompaniment is something of a first for the choir. Just Strings was formed in 1990 and is an experienced, professional, all female string quartet, well established in the south-east.

“They are specialist instrumental music teachers at the top of the music profession. Marcus Martin, organist, was born in Worthing and studied piano, organ and general music at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As accompanist he has appeared in many prestigious venues such as the South Bank complex, Royal Albert Hall and Edinburgh Festival.

“Playing the flute is Dominic Smith. He lives in Sussex and teaches the flute both privately and in local schools. During his time in the army as a musician he performed at military occasions for royalty, in dance bands as well as concerts on Royal Naval aircraft carriers and the QE2.

“Eleanor Hodgson, oboe, completed a BA in French and music at university and became involved with many orchestral ensembles in Sheffield, including the University Symphony, Chamber and Wind Orchestras and returned to Worthing as a guest solo artist for the Rowland Singers in July 2007.

“Rose Setten, soprano, is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2010 she graduated with a 1st class Bmus(Hons) degree from the Royal Northern College of Music. In 2004 Rose won the title of BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year and has appeared as a soloist on BBC television and radio, including Songs of Praise and the Daily Service.”

Helen Emery is the musical director for The Rowland Singers. She is an accomplished pianist and oboist and has been musical director for several local amateur dramatic societies. Helen has recently become chairman of the Thames South Group for the National Association of Choirs.

The first concert is at St. Margaret’s Church, Arundel Road, Angmering on Wednesday, March 28 starting at 7.30pm. The second concert will be held at Emmanuel United Reformed Church, St. Michael’s Road, Worthing with the same programme, on Thursday, March 29 at 7.30pm.
