Varied Russian music

Sussex Chorus is presenting an evening of Russian music at All Saints Church, The Drive, Hove on Saturday, March 31 at 7.30pm.

Spokeswoman Penny Jeffrey said: “The varied programme highlights the range and beauty of Russian music. One of the most well-known pieces is the Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s opera Prince Igor, made popular by the use of some of its themes in the musical Kismet. The dance theme is continued with the Chorus and Dance of the Peasants from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. Chorus members have been assured that only singing is required of them for this performance!

“As a complete contrast, a selection of choruses from Rachmaninov’s hauntingly-beautiful Vespers will also be performed, together with other works by Glinka, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, inspired by the liturgy of the Russian Orthodox faith.

“The concert will be conducted by the Sussex Chorus musical director Neil Jenkins. Neil has been guiding the choir through a varied and exciting musical journey for over ten years and this programme should prove to be a real highlight for singers and audience alike.

“Sussex Chorus will be joined by the soprano Jacquelyn Fugelle and the mezzo-soprano Susan Legg. Jacquelyn has been described as one of the most versatile sopranos of her generation and has performed throughout Europe, Canada and South America. She has also been a soloist on P & O’s Classical Cruises’

“Susan has sung with Sussex Chorus on several occasions, notably in their recent performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius which featured Neil Jenkins as solo tenor. Since winning the National Mozart Singing Competition she has enjoyed a flourishing career and she has earned an international reputation.

“Terence Allbright, the well-known pianist and composer, often accompanies Jacquelyn and Susan in recitals and together they will be providing an interesting and varied programme based on the Russian theme for the evening.”
