Singer Grace Carter talks BBC Sound of 2019 and headlining her own tour

“I was brought up in a single parent family and was very angry and frustrated. I had a lot of unanswered questions,” she said.

“When my mum met my stepdad he was the one who mentioned it as an outlet for me as he was a songwriter. There was no pressure but it really helped and has been a great release for me ever since, although I have yet to write a happy song.”

The 20 year old was born in London but lived in Brighton from the age of nine to 18, and she still counts the seaside city as home.

The Heal Me singer came third in the BBC’s Sound of 2019 list behind winner Octavian and second place King Princess.

“It was surreal finding out I was included,” she explained. “I was in America and hadn’t heard from my manager so assumed I hadn’t gone on there and just thought there is always next year.

“It is amazing to be recognised for your work and to follow in the footsteps of people like Adele, who I love.”

Adele is the first singer that Grace says she discovered herself, with her music tastes influenced by her mother.

“Music forms the relationship with my mum as we would listen to it and laugh or cry with one another.”

Having been on tour for the last year and a half Grace is looking forward to touring again this year.

“Most of the time when I was living out of van on the road it was as support, so you think wow this is great, but touring on your own is crazy.

“It it overwhelming to have people there who have bought a ticket to see you and who are singing songs back to you.”

The singer is looking forward to putting together a show for her fans with songs from her latest EP Why Her Not Me which was released last year.

“There will be a mixture of songs some of which I don’t think are right for the album but I love the vibe of them,” she said.

“I am working on the album at the moment and don’t want to rush it but it is great as two of my friends are producing it.”

It seems the singer is still getting used to her increasing fame as her single Heal Me is currently the record of the week on Greg James’s BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show and is featured on BBC Radio 2’s playlist.

“I am finding it crazy as I’ll be in the car and my song will come on the radio.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it.”
