Smee sets sail for apantomime adventure

BEN Watson, a graduate of Central School of Speech and Drama, will be performing the role of Smee in this year’s swashbuckling pantomime Peter Pan.

Prior to rehearsals starting Ben answered a few questions about panto, Christmas and why he decided to become an actor.

Have you visited Hastings before?
“I have and I love it! Always nice to be by the sea. I performed once before at The White Rock with The Treason Show, the satirical news sketch show and had a great time.”

Tell us a little more about your character?
“Weird, wacky and wonderful. Smee is the lovable sidekick to Captain Hook. Friendly, animated and a whirlwind ball of energy he’ll get you shouting, singing, laughing and clapping along.”

What do you love most about pantomime?
“It’s such an important Christmas tradition and I love the seasonal vibe, everyone’s happy, excited and weighed down with shopping! When I was a kid it was what I looked forward to seeing it and it’s great to be a part of so many people’s Christmas.”

What made you decide to become an actor?
Dressing up as a Blues Brother and performing Everybody needs Someday to Love in front of my year in an assembly when I was at secondary school. I remember thinking afterwards ‘Yup this is the job for me!’”
