The man behind the panto words this year

Simon Aylin is an established writer with his own children’s touring company Telling Hands, and is this year delighted to be writing for Paul Nicholas who leads the cast of Peter Pan as the villainous Captain Hook, at the White Rock Theatre.

Simon has written pantomimes for theatres all over the country and even taken pantomime to foreign shores. This year his pantomimes are being performed as far afield as Ottawa in Canada.

He said: “Watching pantomime with my family as a child was my first experience of theatre and I’ve been hooked ever since.

“Pantomime is a great tradition but also has to feel fresh and new and exciting.

“I spend weeks going between reading old scripts, reading the news, listening to new music and watching old sketches on You Tube.

“Then when my brain is full to bursting with ideas I give it a shake and see what falls out.

“A great pantomime has great songs, great characters, great jokes and above all a great story that children can believe in.

“Peter Pan is such a well known and loved story.

“We want grandparents and teenagers along with the mums and dads and boys and girls to come along and become involved in the story.”
