A birthday tea was held at Ashdown Lodge, Wendy Ridge, Rustington, yesterday, and Winifred was presented with a card from the Queen.

She also received a card from the director of a firm she used to work for years ago, making upholstery.

Niece Ann Cairns explained: “She used to make curtains for a high-class store in Waltham Cross in the 1950s. She is always talking about working there and she was really good at what she did.”

Born in north London on October 15, 1915, Winifred was the youngest of five children.

She was married to Jim, who was in the Navy, in 1951. They lived in Enfield for a number of years, then moved to Brighton.

After Jim died in 1980, Winifred eventually moved to Rustington and lived with her sister, Florence, until she died about 20 years ago.

Care home manager Bridget Hart said Winifred had moved there in July 2012.

“She is such a great character,” she said. “She always loves a joke, she is lovely.”

Ann added: “She is gregarious and it suits her because she always has someone to talk to. The home has been marvellous. They have really looked after her and I don’t think she would have made it to 100 without them.”
