1000 litres of crop spray spilled at Heyshott

Firefighters were called to Leggs Farm, Heyshott around midday today (Tuesday, April 19) when a sprayer tank on the back of a tractor burst spilling 1000 litres of crop spraying chemicals onto a field and into the lane outside Leggs Farm.

Fire crews from Midhurst and East Wittering and a specialist breathing apparatus vehicle from Shoreham were called to the scene.

Officer in charge Duncan Knight said: “The farmer and the fire service managed to contain the spillage.

“Some of the liquid ran down the road but we stopped it going into the water course.

“It was fungicide and growth restrictor being used to spray a barley field.”

An Environment Agency officer is now coming to the scene to advise on how to dispose of the chemicals.
