A South East Water spokesman said: 'Around 1,500 people experienced loss of supply. However, most of the area was re-zoned by 17.30pm.

'At 17.40pm South East Water started calling back customers in the affected area who reported that they had no water.'

However, the maintenance crew's job was made more difficult as they tried to repair the breach in driving rain and storm force winds.

'Around half a dozen customers were without water till 2am when the repair was completed. Inspectors had to work through the night to deal with this issue as they were hampered and delayed by the adverse weather and the main was fully reinstated by 6am.'
