2009 New Year Honours announced

The Radio 4 broadcasting icon and journalist, who lives at Rudgwick, was made an MBE for services to sport.

The former Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex Hugh Wyatt was created a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for services to the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Capt Michael Charles Gordon-Lennox, of Midhurst. Chairman, St Dunstan's. For voluntary service to visually impaired ex-servicemen and women - OBE

Kathleen Margaret Norah Allen, of Bognor Regis. For voluntary service to people with disabilities in West Sussex - MBE

Pauline Allen. For services to the Independent Monitoring Board at HM Prison Ford and to the community in West Sussex - MBE

Lesley Jane Coffin, of Chichester. Head of Secretariat, Network Operations South East, Highways Agency, Department for Transport - MBE

Peggy Gledhill, of Horsham. For voluntary service to the community in Horsham - MBE

Dennis Edward Goodwin, of Worthing. For voluntary services to the World War One Veterans' Association - MBE

Claire Elizabeth Hicks. Chief executive, Impact Foundation. For services to international development - MBE

Robert Daniel Hutton, of West Wittering. For services to St John Ambulance in Surrey - MBE

Dr John William Mason, of Chichester. For services to the South Downs Planetarium and Science Centre, Chichester - MBE

Charles Nicholas Partridge, of Shoreham. For public service - MBE

Kate Schroder, of Chichester. Chief executive, 4sight. For services to visually impaired people in West Sussex - MBE

Paul Stennett, of Horsham. Chief executive, United Kingdom Accreditation Service. For services to business - MBE

Anne Caroline Taylor, from Chichester. For services to young people and to the community in Chichester - MBE
