24 volunteers for flood wardens scheme

THE Lewes Flood Warden scheme is back on dry ground. The scheme, in which volunteers keep an eye open for flooding in their particular areas, was set up after the floods of 2000.

It was originally designed to have 60 volunteers, operating on a neighbourhood watch basis, but at a recent meetinbg only one person turned up.

Lewes Town Council has since taken over operation of the service and town clerk Steve Brigden was able to tell council members on Thursday last week that, partly due to an an article published in the Sussex Express, some 24 people had signed up at a recent meeting.

'We shall manage the flood warning network in future and we have enough volunteers to get it going,' he said.
