46,000 struggling on breadline

A shocking number of West Sussex people, including former nurses and teachers, are living below the poverty line and are struggling to pay for food, utility bills, and emergency household repairs.

More than six per cent of people in the county - estimated at a minimum of 46,107, have fallen into the poverty traph , according to charity Elizabeth Finn Care.

The charity has identified that at least this number of British and Irish people have been pushed below the poverty line.

Key triggers for the downward spiral are loss of work, long term illness, disability, taking responsibility for a family member, divorce or poor pension provision.

And former teachers and nurses rank highest among the occupational backgrounds supported by the charity.
