60 years in the same job - that's some undertaking

LITERALLY man and boy, Littlehampton funeral director Roger Kempson has celebrated 60 years of working with FA Holland Funeralcare in the town.

On Monday, staff at the firm's Terminus Road offices threw a surprise party for Roger to mark this extraordinary achievement.

After leaving school at 14, Roger, now 75, worked for a short period as a blacksmith before taking up an apprenticeship with the Littlehampton-based firm as a stone mason.

After seven years apprenticeship and a stint of National Service, he was asked to join their funeral department in 1954 where he still works as a part-time funeral director.

Born in Brighton, Roger, of Belloc Road, has lived in Littlehampton since 1934. He and his wife of 55 years, Joyce, have two children, Ross and Avril, who also live in the town.

Over the years, Roger has directed hundreds of funerals, including that of the 16th Duke of Norfolk, Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, who died in 1975.

The service itself has changed very little over the years, according to Roger.

He said: "I get great job satisfaction working here. Helping bereaved people is what it's all about. It's not just about caring for the people who have passed away, we also do that for the people who are left behind.

"The staff here are all brilliant. I have worked with June Sutherland for more than 40 years and the company has very high standards."

When asked if he might one day be celebrating 70 years at the company, Roger replied: "Well, I'm still fit and healthy and although I work only part-time, that still means I'm in most days.

"I genuinely enjoy my work and I will keep going as long as I can and as long as I am asked to."

He added: "The party was a total surprise. I didn't have an inkling that it was going to happen. I was presented with a crystal vase and Joyce was given some beautiful flowers.

"We had a buffet and drinks and it was really nice to celebrate with everyone. I had a retirement party when I semi-retired at 62, so this was my second!"

Torquil Morgan, FA Holland manager, said: "Roger is a true representative of this company. He has worked through three generations of the Holland family and brings stability, experience and respect to the role.

"Nowadays it is unusual to get someone to work with such dedication for so long and we really appreciate what he has done for us over the years."
