A challenge they can't refuse

BIFFA refuse and recycling collectors based in Bexhill are swapping bins for boots on Friday, July 29 to take part in a 40-mile walking challenge in aid of Action Medical Research.

Formerly Verdant, the company carries out waste collection for Rother District Council and is entering two teams of five men each in the PLOD Challenge.

Spokeswoman Jenny Morris said: “The walk begins at midnight at the magical ancient site of Devil’s Dyke, just north of Brighton, and they are expected to complete the course within 12 to 16 hours.

“The charity covers three vital areas of unmet medical need for children - treating sick and vulnerable babies, helping disabled children and targeting rare diseases. More information is available on the web at: www.action.org.uk/plod_south_downs_way”

The two teams from Bexhill are: Team 1 - Wayne Grinham, business manager; Russell Ingold, supervisor; Trevor Dangerfield, Ollie Cruickshank and Fred Arnold. Team 2 - Derek Rhodes, supervisor; Simon Turner; Guy Trotman; Nick Turner and Gareth Leverett.

Jenny added: “The guys are already relatively fit due to the type of work they do, but they are all undergoing their own training programme.”

For anyone willing to sponsor the walkers, the teams’ sponsorship web pages are at: www.action.org.uk/sponsor/Verdant1 or Verdant2

Wayne Grinham, from Biffa’s London Road depot, said: “This is a great challenge and it’ll be tough, but it’s for a really great charity. We’re all in training and should be raring to go as midnight rolls around on Friday, July 29.

“We’re asking all the good people of Rother to support our effort through sponsoring a team or individuals. Every team has to raise a minimum of £1,250, and it doesn’t matter whether you donate a lump sum or do it by the mile.”
