A dazzler as nations unite for Littlehampton carnival

WITH almost as many nations taking part as in the World Cup, it was no wonder Saturday's Littlehampton Carnival was such a success.

Countries of the world was the theme of the procession and a medley of Egyptians, French, Italians and Americans and others took to the streets of the town in walking groups and on floats creating a dazzling display.

Crowds lined the road to watch the procession wind its way St Winefride's Road to Southfields recreation ground.

Generous onlookers donated a total of 2,432.09 to the street collections, less than last year but still a great amount.

Tyndall Jones broke his collection record by taking a staggering 416.83.

In the town centre during the day, performances by bands and displays of dancing entertained the crowds and a tombola proved a sell-out, raising more than 200.

Speaking in the town at lunchtime on Saturday, Nicky Hitchins, secretary of the carnival group and mistress of ceremonies, said: "It's been great here today, there are a lot of people looking smiley and happy and there's a real carnival atmosphere.

"Everyone seems to be really getting into the spirit of it and we've had a lot of support from people."
