A footbridge too far?

SHOREHAM could get a new footbridge if a £2million bid for lottery funding hits the jackpot.

Sustrans, the transport charity which supports and promotes walking and cycling, has been shortlisted in The Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmarks programme for its Connect2 project.

This aims to encourage people to walk and cycle. The project has reached the second stage and is now competing for a grant of between 25million and 50million.

If Sustrans "wins the lottery", it is looking at helping to fund 50 or more schemes across the UK '“ and a bid for funding for a new Shoreham High Street bridge could be part of that.

West Sussex County Council, which owns Shoreham footbridge, says the structure is nearing the end of its life. Replacing the bridge with an iconic design has been highlighted in the Shoreham Renaissance strategy.
