The Kent-inspired art work has been installed in a handful of trains which serve the whole area, including the Hastings to Charing Cross line.

So lucky passengers from Hastings, Battle, Robersbridge, Etchingham and Crowhurst will soon be able to enjoy the beauty of the countryside while answering their own call of nature.

The new murals, which feature coastal and landscape scenes in the style of a photo-gallery, are being tested in four of Southeastern’s class 375 trains serving the mainline services from the Kent and Sussex coasts into London.

The new scheme is in response to passenger feedback about the condition of the toilets on the trains.

Barbara Thomas, passenger services director at Southeastern said: “Our passengers tell us that the environment and cleanliness of our on-board toilets is extremely important to them.

“This project will test the design and practicalities of the initiative and following this, we plan to ‘roll it out’ to more trains.”

Southeastern plan to commission another series of designs for additional class 375 trains.

The firm says these are expected to be launched later in the year.
