A wedding date to remember

THERE was only one day on which bonfire die-hards Bert Arnold and Carol Watts could possibly get married '¦. November 5.

And so on Saturday, Carol, 38, secretary of the Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society, tied the knot at Lewes Register Office with Bert, 60, who has been involved with Commercial Square Bonfire Society for 30 years.

Carol has been part of the social whirl of the bonfire movement since the age of nine months.

'I can't imagine life without the bonfire night calendar, she said.

'It doesn't matter if it's fine or rainy, if you are a proper bonfire person you will go out and enjoy it in all weather.

'You've got to be in it to understand. Now I'm married to a man who's as into it as I am. It's great.'

Carol and Bert became engaged, appropriately, on November 5 last year.

Best man at the wedding was Commercial Square-stalwart John Richards and bridesmaids were Carol's daughter Louise, god-daughter Chloe and her sister Molly.

After the wedding, the couple stepped out in the processions, Carol as a smuggler and Bert as a Cavalryman.

The fact that Bert was near the front and Carol at the back did nothing to dampen their enthusiasm.

The couple are expecting a baby in February.
