A week of words

A week of words across Hastings and Rother comes to a finale next weekend (November 25th/26th), with Squeeze songwriter Chris Difford and a delightful day of literature for the whole family at The De la Warr Pavilion, featuring Captain Corelli's Mandolin Writer Louis De Bernieres.

SATURDAY

Chris Difford, who wrote the hits "Up The Junction" and "Cool For Cats" alongside bandmates Glen Tilbrook and Jools Holland, entertains with his brand new band at St.Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, on Saturday November 25th, promising all the classic hits as well as his most recent material. Chris is supported by the Sheffield based French cabaret pairing, The Lovers, who provide a cheeky, amusing and romantic tete a tete. The Lovers have performed all over the world and their songs, some of which have been written by English icon Jarvis Cocker, have been described as "music to inspire a feeling of romance, paired with a sparkle of lust"

Tickets are 9/7 and are available on 0845 274 1001 and also on the door. Doors open at 8pm.

Chris Difford will also be running a relaxed, informal and completely free songwriting workshop for young people (13-25) at The White Rock Hotel at 4pm on the same day.

SUNDAY

Sunday's event at the De la Warr features three events for children and their families and three events more suitable for adults.

Children's events include Rother based writer Charlotte Moore talking about her amusing historical book "Who Was William The Conqueror?" at 11am and at noon, top children's author and former Bexhill resident Philip Ardagh, writer of the famous Eddie Dickens novels (shortly to be made into a Warner Brothers Movie), offers a lively audience participation packed talk on his two favourite subjects....books and himself! The Children's events are rounded off at 2pm, with a singalong show presented by Louis De Bernieres, who plays his very own mandolin alongside his band The Antonius Players. Tickets to include all these three events are 5 each.

Louis will later be reading from his most recent book, the Whitbread Novel Award shortlisted "Birds Without Wings" and answering questions about his work. There is also a workshop and discussion on how to go about getting your own work published lead by successful Sussex based novelist and playwright Susannah Waters and a session of quality short story readings featuring the winners of the festival writing competition and special guests. The workshop begins at 11am, the short-storys at 3.30pm and Louis De Bernieres at 5.30pm, with each event 5 or 10 for all three.

FRIDAY

Meanwhile poetry lovers will be treated to some of the best of Britain's emerging wordsmiths at Eat@ Cafe, Claremont, Hastings, on Friday November 24th. Local poetic prodigy Richard Evans has assembled an enviable line-up of gifted young writers from all across the UK who will be performing alongside TS Elliot Poetry Prize Winner Hugo Williams. Other performers include TIm Clare, who recently presented the Channel 4 series "How To Get A Book Deal", London Poet Idol Winner Rhian Edwards, and Tom Sutton who has never actually written a poem (!) - instead he writes letters to companies and reads these and the amusing replies on stage. The evening is completed with a set from Hastings' very own singing/songwriting sensation Tim Hoyte. Tickets are 6/4 and are available on the door, and the evening starts at 8pm.
