A winter warmer for Heathfield’s ‘Space’

The community space in All Saints Church, Heathfield, will soon be a warmer and more welcoming venue thanks to an early Christmas gift from The Veolia Environmental Trust.

The Trust has awarded Friends of All Saints Church Old Heathfield (FASCOH) a grant of £10,000 to fund installation of a new heating system in the community space that was created in 2010.

Although it is a busy venue for activities and events, the lack of heating means that it cannot be used all year round. The grant is one of 27 that the Board awarded to community and environmental projects, with a grant total being over £875,000. They award grants through the Landfill Communities Fund and since 1998 have awarded more than £2.8m to 115 projects in Sussex. The Trust now starts working with FASCOH to finalise the project’s details, including its start date, so that work can begin as soon as possible.

Trustee Nigel Colne CBE said: “The church’s Victorian heating-system broke down in the winter of 2013, meaning we had to implement a short-term fix that was unsustainable. This new system will be cost effective and fuel efficient and its installation will mean the start of a new era for the village.”

Paul Taylor, executive director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, said, “The friends group needs to be congratulated on securing their grant in the face of stiff competition from a large number of other applicants. Their project to install a new heating system will make a real difference to the community of Heathfield, and we look forward to seeing it start.”
