A21 crash brings down power cables

A DRIVER had a lucky escape after her car collided with an electricity pole - snapping it and sending live cables crashing down on to the A21 at Whatlington.

The 57-year-old was heading south on the A21 when her car is said to have veered on to the opposite side of the road before leaving the carriageway and hitting the pole.

The accident happened near the junction with Park Lane just after 5.30pm on Sunday (May 11).

Firefighters from Battle were called to the scene amid fears the woman seriously hurt and trapped in the vehicle.

But the driver, from Hastings, was able to get out of the silver Peugeot 207 by herself.

South East Coast Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and paramedic car to the scene.

The woman was assessed by paramedics before she was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings with what was believed to be a minor head injury.

Police closed the A21 in both directions as engineers from UK Power Networks worked to clear the cables.
