A21 road improvements good news for Bexhill jobs

LONG-awaited improvements to the A21 could unlock one of the barriers which have deterred job-providing new businesses from moving to Bexhill.

Rother leader Cllr Graham Gubby returned jubilant from a press conference on Tuesday at which Transport Minister John Spellar announced a seven-year, 80m scheme to improve the district's road link to the capital - nick-named "The Snail Trail" by long-suffering users.

With Bexhill and Battle MP Gregory Barker and working with the South East England Development Agency, Cllr Gubby has been working through the development of the Task Force Five Point Plan for much-needed A21 improvements south of Pembury.

Creating a quicker, safer road link to the capital is a key element in regeneration plans for both Bexhill and Hastings.

Cllr Gubby said: "All the companies I have been dealing with, when I talk to them about regeneration opportunities in the area the very first thing they talk about access - access in and access out of this area.

"This is why at Government Minister level we have been trying to point out how crucial a good transport infrastructure is to the regeneration opportunities in this area."

Cllr Gubby said: "The Regional Assembly has supported the SOCCOMS findings.

"The link road is now scheduled to open in 2007; it had been much longer - 2010.

"2007 in anybody's language is 'now'. It is not long for a project of that scale. Things are going to have to happen very quickly."
