Sussex Police said the driver of the Fiat has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The A23 northbound was still closed at 7pm.

Inspector Andy Judson said: “We are working hard to clear debris scattered across all three lanes and to establish exactly what happened.

“In the meantime a short local diversion has been set up, taking traffic off the A23 at the A272 junction and returning it to the A23 at Jeremy’s Garage.

“Nevertheless the area is probably best avoided if at all possible.”
