A24 flyover called for to ease traffic

A CALL for a 'simple flyover' to relieve worsening traffic congestion at the Washington A24 roundabout was made at a meeting of West Sussex County Council on Friday.

Members were considering a report that the Regional Transport Board had decided to bring forward an A24 Ashington and Southwater road-safety scheme by three years to 2012-2013.

Cllr James Walsh asked for priorities in the project to be reconsidered to make sure the Washington roundabout was included in priority schemes.

He said that there were major traffic hold-ups at the roundabout and safety implications in all directions.

A simple flyover would make sure there were no more half-mile tailbacks at the roundabout, he said.

However, Cllr Derek Whittington, the cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said the safety scheme was already worked up and drawn so he could not see a possibility of this.
