A24 road safety scheme is being brought forward

A ROAD scheme that will see any remaining central reservation gaps closed on the A24 betweeb Ashington and Southwater and three new junctions created will go ahead earlier than expected.

The 35.3m scheme was listed in the Regional Transport Board's programme for a start in 2015/16. But now it is being brought forward with a start during 2012/13.

The announcement has been welcomed by Derek Whittington, county council cabinet member.

He said: "This scheme is all about improving safety on a stretch of the A24 that has an unacceptable accident record.
