Abandoned chinchilla finds new home

A young male chinchilla has been re-homed to Drusillas Park in East Sussex by the Mallydams Wood RSPCA Centre in Hastings.

The chinchilla was one of ten recently abandoned in Church Wood, St Leonards.

The discarded animals were discovered by a dog walker, who rescued the defenceless creatures before notifying the authorities.

Zoo Manager, Sue Woodgate was contacted by the RSPCA and agreed to take in one of the chinchillas.

Sue commented: "I was extremely saddened to hear of the cruelty the chinchillas' experienced and we were very happy to offer one a home at the zoo. Chinchillas are sweet natured creatures and like all animals, they deserve to be looked after properly."

At Drusillas, the new addition will share an enclosure with chinchilla Toby, who was born at the Park in 2002. Toby has lived alone since his companion Kay Kay passed away and so far the new friends have been settling well together.

The chinchilla has not yet been named and staff at the zoo are asking for help with this matter. If you have an opinion on what Drusillas' newest resident should be called, please email it to [email protected] together with your own name and address. The person who offers the best suggestion will receive a day out at the Park for themselves and up to three other people. Closing date 29 February 2008.
