Throughout the summer and the recent mild autumn nights holidaymakers have been setting up camp in parking spaces along the seafront, despite signs forbidding them to stay overnight.

Some vehicles have stayed over a weekend, others as long as a week.

Neighbours have complained to Seaford Town Council claiming the large vehicles are unsightly, block sea views and their occupants add to litter problems by dumping rubbish.

Town clerk Len Fisher said: Camper vans park for long periods overnight for free and residents feel it is wrong. They feel if there is a by-law saying no to overnight parking it should be enforced.

The town council has asked Lewes District Council, whose job it is to enforce the parking laws, to act but still vehicles continue to park on the seafront.

Owen Clifford, the district council community services manager, said there were not enough council staff for 24-hour parking patrols.

We have car park attendants who supervise the whole district. When we find any vehicles that we suspect of being parked overnight in any of our car parks we will ask them to leave, or take further action if we can prove they were in the car park overnight.

We don t, unfortunately, have the resources or staff to patrol the streets overnight.

The district council has agreed to consider extra and more prominent signs to discourage any further overnight parking.
