Action group finish twitten make-over with artistic flair

Hard-working volunteers have completed another phase in making the twitten between Battle's Mount Street car park and the High Street a '˜pleasant light and airy gateway to the town' - despite being underneath first floor buildings.

With much hands-on help from The Battle Local Action Planning Group (BLAPG) members and Battle Town Council the practical work of painting the ceiling and maintaining the lighting has been completed.

Last week with the help of Ann Stewart, head of art at Battle Abbey School, who offered a choice of pieces of past students artwork, BLAPG was able to install four pieces within the wall arches to help enhance the experience of using the twitten.

Paula Fisher, BLAPG project champion, said: “I am delighted and relieved to see this project completed and already receiving admiring comments from many people using the twitten.”

Work on the twitten started early last year.

The first objective was to have it cleaned and painted for the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in October.

Having achieved this goal, Paula had bigger ideas and set about the twitten art idea, which has taken shape this week.

Bev Marks, chairman of BLAPG said: “Once the twitten cleaning and painting objective was visible we gathered support to do even more.

“Battle Historical Society and Battle Museum have taken a particularly keen and supportive interest in the work.”

BLAPG is hoping this spirit of taking care of the town will prove to be infectious and others will wish to join the small band of BLAPG-ers in other improvement projects.
