Council staff asked them to leave and they departed at the weekend.

The council said this week that it was now arranging for a clean-up at the site and the strengthening of access restriction. Bollards are being put up.

Security on the lower gate has been stepped up and it will eventually be protected with more bollards.

Said Cllr Elizabeth Lee, cabinet member for community issues: 'It is more cost-effective to have good security than the time and cost spent dealing with several incidents in such sites every year.'
