Action packed science week

Today sees the climax of Science and Technology week at Charters Ancaster preparatory and nursery school.

This afternoon pupils will attempt to lift a video camera on a balloon filled with helium to get a birds view of the school and grounds.

Another highlight will be a visit from an original working Model T Ford and setting up a working radio station in one of the classrooms.

Pupils have this week been involved in a variety of practical activities including competitions to make marble runs and build electric powered boats using simple materials.

There have been visits to such places as the Brede Steam Engine Society and the Blue Reef sea life centre.

Visitors to the school included members of the Hastings & District Model Flying Association who brought along large examples of radio controlled models such as the Spitfire fighter and Lancaster bomber.

Model railway enthusiasts also laid out a variety of tracks in the school hall. The school has a history of undertaking practical activities and has previously launched solid fuel model rockets, constructed and flown model aircraft in National competitions and built working wind powered generators.

Geoff Collins the Principal and Head of Science and Technology commented "Our science and technology curriculum is based on, but not always confined, to the National Curriculum requirements. We have the time and opportunity to sometimes "go off at a tangent" if an event or particular item attracts our interest. Our emphasis is not only on high levels of achievement, but to make science lessons an exciting and exhilarating experience for pupils of all abilities. We want our pupils to have this interested and enquiring attitude for the rest of their lives. Science is fun at Charters Ancaster Prep."
