Mr Mendoza, who was the council chairman last year and was re-elected in May, said his resignation as the councillor for St Mary’s Ward took effect at 9am yesterday morning.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me, I have really loved the role, I am passionate about the area I live in and represent,” he said.

He said his new job with Latest TV had meant on-going commitments with the channel and that had made him give up my elected role.

“Due to my ever-increasing commitments to Latest TV and to avoid any potential conflict of interest, I have decided to walk away from front-line politics,” he said.

“I have made a lot of new friends over the past few years, I know I have helped many as well and this in particular is the role that I will regret giving up.

“I want to thank all those who have supported me over the many years, but I will not vanish as my TV role will in fact make me even more noticeable in the area.

“I wish the very best of luck to whoever gets my seat and hope whoever it is, will enjoy working with some of the best councillors the district has ever seen.”
