Dr Roger Alcock, a specialist registrar in emergency medicine, doesn't sit at home and watch morning TV like most people do on their holidays.

His role has taken him to the far climbs of Peru, Namibia and China.

He said, "I'm very lucky. You get to meet a lot of great people and you learn a lot about the local environment, customs and language and the way people live in different countries. It's a real eye opening experience."

Dr Alcock recently had an article published in the Emergency Medicine Journal which chronicled his experiences in Peru.

He has worked at Conquest since July last year and will move to Brighton in six months to take up another post '“ eventually, in around two years, he will hopefully become a consultant.

He said, "I would still like to carry on my role with the charities when I become a consultant."
