African expedition in memory of Bexhill teen

Pupils, parents and staff from Battle Abbey School are currently working hard to raise funds for the 'James Haggerty' Expedition to Kenya.

As part of extensive fund raising activities Battle Abbey Prep School pupils took part in a sponsored swim at the School Swimming Pool and raised a huge 2,729.13 towards the project.

Head teacher Judy Clark said: "The children are delighted to be able to make a contribution to the project and thanks must go to the parents who were all very generous in their sponsorship. Many of the children excelled themselves in the amount they swam. Particular mention should go to Oliver Grainge, who managed to swim an amazing 156 lengths."

The expedition team, made up of 16 pupils from years 9 to 13 and a number of staff and adults, are due to touch down in Kenya on July 12.

They will travel to Laikipia to take part in a community project to build the James Haggerty Nursery School.

The school will be built in memory of James Haggerty, son of Jackie and Russell Haggerty, Clerk of Works at Battle Abbey School, and will enhance the lives of hundreds of small children who currently have a school called the Shady Tree Nursery, because they meet under the shade of an acacia tree.

They have no writing materials but simply use the sandy ground.

To build a school from scratch in just under two weeks is a mammoth task for the team and a unique opportunity for the Battle Abbey School pupils to help other less privileged children whilst experiencing a very different culture and life style to their own.
