Alcohol fueled attacks on wife

A Bexhill father-of-one who twice attacked his wife in a drunken row has walked free from court.

Steven Bailey, 40, threw a CD at partner Denise while she was sitting on a sofa at her father's flat in Kingscott Close.

Lewes Crown Court heard how it shattered and cut her on the forehead which needed cleaning by a doctor.

A year later he hurled a baby changing bag at Mrs Bailey at their home in Balmoral Court, ripping the skin of her left elbow.

Prosecutor Gail Purdy told the court: "He came at her with a clenched fist and she thought he was going to hit her. She shouted at him, 'Don't hurt me'."

Bailey was finally arrested after his wife eventually reported the attacks to police in June, 2007.

Miss Purdy added: "She attended Hastings Police Station and reported the assaults after the defendant became aggressive and abusive. She became frightened of him."

In interview Bailey admitted he hit his wife after they had a massive row when he told her he was leaving her.

Bailey, now of Heatherdune Road, admitted two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on June 8, 2007, and between May 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.

The court heard that he has a previous conviction for pushing his hand into his wife's face after a drinking session.

Defending, Andrew Selby said: "He just wants it aired that he has not had a drink for over a year."

The court heard the couple were married in November, 2005, before having a baby daughter.

Judge David Rennie gave Bailey an 18-month supervision order and told him to attend an alcohol treatment programme.

He said: "Clearly a bit of work needs to be done to keep people safe within the house."
