Aldi still has sights set on town

The supermarket chain lost its bid to build a store at the historic cattle market site in Market Street.

Now it is drawing up fresh plans to create a store in the town.

The exact location of the planned new store has yet to be confirmed.

A spokesman said: 'Aldi is currently reviewing the situation of the Hailsham Cattle Market and is still committed to opening a store in Hailsham.'

Cllr Ian Haffenden gave the news a cautious welcome.

He said: 'I would be very positive and supportive of them opening a store in Hailsham provided it is in an appropriate location in the town and not the cattle site.

'I don't think the town does need another supermarket.

'Why don't they go to Polegate where they actually want such a store?'

Cllr Haffenden thought empty shops in the High Street might be a good location for Aldi.

He also suggested space in an industrial estate could be a good idea.

Phil Hook, from Hailsham Action Market Aciton Group, said: 'I am feeling open-minded about it.

'At least everyone is still committed to a market in Hailsham which is good for farmers.'

Mr Hook confirmed the existing cattle market site could still be an option for Aldi.

The superstore chain might go through an appeal process against Wealden District Council.

In November the council refused Aldi's plans to build at the cattle market site in Market Street.

Aldi wanted to move the market to Knight's Farm on the Boship Roundabout.

Farmers might have to stump up to 1 million from their own pockets if the cattle market is moved.

A special meeting is being held between Aldi representatives and stakeholders later this month.
